Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal Lenses

What are Multifocals?

You’ve probably heard someone say they’re ‘far-sighted’ or ‘near-sighted’, or simply that they need glasses for reading. You may have even had glasses like this yourself. However, as your eyes change or age, the need for visual support also changes, meaning you can often need help for both near vision and distance.

Instead of the inconvenience of having 2 different pairs of glasses, one for far and one for near, multifocals (sometimes called progressive lenses) enable both your far and near prescriptions to be built into one convenient lens.

Why do you need Multifocals?

Multifocals allow you to see at multiple distances from up close to far away, and everything in between.

Whether you’re driving, in the office, reading, or just out-and-about, because your multifocal lenses take into account all of your visual needs you can wear your glasses all day, regardless of how your visual needs change.

Why choose multifocal lenses?

As we mentioned, multifocal lenses provide vision correction across multiple zones.

What does that mean? Well first, let’s look at how single vision lenses work.

As the name suggests, single vision lenses provide correction for a single area of vision. Because single vision lenses only contain one prescription, distance or reading, you often need multiple pairs in order to accommodate your range of vision.

The advantage of multifocal lenses is the ability to have clear vision at all distances, eliminating the need for separate pairs.

You can see from the image that your range of visual needs are accounted for in different sections of the lens from your near vision at the bottom, to distance at the top. The amount of visual correction you receive from these areas will depend on a range of factors, including the type of lens you choose, and the depth of vision correction required.

Is quality that important?

When it comes to your sight, using an experienced and knowledgeable optician that provides quality products is one of the most important factors for ensuring the best outcomes.

Like other health support products, there are varying levels of quality in optical lenses. Higher quality lenses provide greater support, technology, and inclusions within the lens that allow you to adapt your new glasses quickly and comfortably.

These higher quality lenses also allow for more personalisation, taking into account where and how you need support to create a customised solution that meets all of your needs.
